Florida Medical Students Avoid OB Practice, Cite Lawsuits
Aug 30, 2006
Researchers from the University of South Florida College of Medicine have found that medical students in Florida are deselecting obstetrics and gynecology, partly because of fear of medical malpractice lawsuits. Surveys were delivered to all fourth-year students in Florida in the autumn of 2005. Although interest in another specialty and lifestyle concerns were listed as general reasons why ob/gyn was rejected, 32 percent of those who had considered the specialty said fear of malpractice suits was a major part of their decision. Additionally, 86 percent of the students who wanted to become obstetricians planned to practice in another state because of the medical liability climate in Florida.
